Wendigo Name Generator — 900+ Frozen Winter-Spirit Names

What Makes a Wendigo Name Sound Frozen?

A wendigo name should sound like it was carried on a winter wind. Where a werewolf name snarls and a banshee name wails, a wendigo name starves. The name draws on Algonquian folklore — the wendigo, a gaunt spirit of winter and insatiable hunger, born when a person starves or breaks a grave taboo. The vocabulary is winter and forest: biboon (Ojibwe, "winter"), agwajiing (in the woods), ice, frost, and the deep cold.

Say them like a name the forest whispers before a blizzard: Wendigo. Biboon. Icewaki. Frostig. Hollowash. These names don't label a character — they chill one.

Wendigo Name Elements and Their Meanings

The pattern is arctic: wendigo names gather winter, hunger, and the deep forest. The Algonquian roots carry the weight of the folklore — a spirit of starvation and taboo, told with respect across many nations. A wendigo name sounds less like a label and more like a frost forming on the window.

The Winter-Spirit Tradition

The wendigo name comes from Algonquian-speaking peoples' folklore. The wendigo is a gaunt, insatiable spirit of winter and hunger — in Ojibwe tradition windigo, in Cree witiko — born when a person starves or commits a grave taboo, and it appears in stories told across the northern woodlands. This page treats the wendigo respectfully as folklore, not as a monster trope, and uses only original name combinations. When you name a wendigo, name the cold first — the character follows.

A Note on Wendigo Culture

The wendigo name is the name of the hunger. From the winter spirit of Algonquian folklore to every cold-haunted character of later fantasy, the figure has meant the same thing: the cold that never fills you. Wendigo names carry the weight of the long winter in a single word. Name your wendigo to name the frost, and the character will feel frozen from the first mention.
