Manticore Name Generator — 900+ Feral Manticore Names

What Makes a Manticore Name Sound Feral?

A manticore name should sound like it was hunting you before you knew its name. Where a sphinx name poses a riddle and a basilisk name judges, a manticore name stalks. The classic manticore name draws on the manticore of Persian legend — recorded by the Greek physician Ctesias as the mardykhoras, "man-eater," a lion-bodied beast with a human head, three rows of teeth, and a scorpion tail that shot venomous spines. The vocabulary is lion, scorpion, and the hunt.

Say them like a predator's title: Manticore. Mardykhoras. Cyrus. Razortail. Sandsting. These names don't label a character — they mark a territory.

Manticore Name Elements and Their Meanings

The pattern is predatory: manticore names gather lion, scorpion, sting, hunt, and the royal names of Persia — the vocabulary of a beast that is at once kingly and savage. Ctesias described the manticore as a man-eater with a human face and a sting it shot like arrows; the bestiaries spread the dread across Europe. A manticore name sounds like a throne with teeth.

The Man-Eater Tradition

The manticore name comes from the man-eating beast of Persian and later European legend. The Greek physician Ctesias recorded the mardykhoras, a lion-bodied, human-headed creature with three rows of teeth and a scorpion tail that fired venomous spines — perhaps inspired by tales of the tiger. Medieval bestiaries carried the manticore across Europe. Fantasy inherits the terror: the elegant, deadly predator with a human face. When you name a manticore, name the hunt first — the character follows.
