Harpy Name Generator — 900+ Storm-Bred Harpy Names

What Makes a Harpy Name Sound Fierce?

A harpy name should sound like it was torn out of a storm. Where a siren name drifts and a pegasus name rises, a harpy name snatches. The classic harpy name draws on Greek myth of the Harpyiai — storm-spirits with women's faces and birds' bodies, daughters of Thaumas and Elektra. They whirl souls away and foul the feasts of heroes. The vocabulary is storm and theft: harpazein (Greek, "to snatch"), thuella (storm-wind), pteron (wing), anemoi (the winds).

Say them like a cry carried off by a gale: Aello. Ocypete. Celaeno. Stormwing. Windshriek. These names don't label a character — they abduct one.

Harpy Name Elements and Their Meanings

The pattern is predatory: harpy names gather storm, wing, claw, and theft. The Greek roots carry the weight of the myth — creatures that exist to take. A harpy name sounds less like a label and more like a gust already reaching for you.

The Storm-Woman Tradition

The harpy name comes from Greek myth of the storm-women. In Hesiod's Theogony, the Harpyiai — Aello, Ocypete, and Celaeno — were winged daughters of Thaumas and Elektra, swift as wind. Homer makes them storm-spirits that snatch the souls of the dead. In Virgil's Aeneid, harpies descend on the Trojans' feast and defile every dish. Later fantasy keeps the image: the fierce, winged, half-bird woman of the upper air. When you name a harpy, name the snatch first — the character follows.

The harpy name is the name of the snatch. From the storm-women of Hesiod to every winged raider of later fantasy, the creature has meant the same thing: the wind that takes. Harpy names carry the fury of the gale in a single word. Name your harpy to name the storm, and the character will feel airborne from the first mention.
